The city of Flensburg is currently planning the construction of a new neighbourhood on a large redevelopment site. The aim is to create a neighbourhood with an infrastructure that promotes and enables resource- and space-efficient lifestyles. The “Hafen-Ost” practical laboratory was created in this context.

The aim was to better understand the process of implementing sufficiency policies and their effects and to develop the knowledge and skills required for sufficiency-orientated policy design. The practical laboratory is a joint project between employees of the city administration and scientists from the European University of Flensburg.

The linked research paper (by Jonas Lage, among others) describes and evaluates the practice lab with regard to the difficulties of implementing sufficiency policies in practice as well as their potential for sustainability.
